STEP and DXF File Basics

DXF: Drawing Exchange Format (Vector CAD Data Format Files)

DXF files are a widely used file format for sharing CAD drawings due to their compatibility, readability, and flexibility in using 2D and 3D designs. One of the key advantages of DXF files is their compatibility with a wide range of CAD software applications, making them a popular choice for sharing CAD drawings across different platforms.

STEP: Standard for the Exchange of Product Data
(3D Modeling and ISO Standard Exchange)

While DXF files are commonly used for 2D and 3D drawing exchange with a focus on design data, STEP files are specifically tailored for sharing comprehensive 3D product models and assemblies in a standardized format. STEP files are ideal for collaborations where users need to share comprehensive 3D models, assemblies, and product information across different CAD platforms.

How Can I Best Use DXF and STEP Files?

You can use the DXF files to aid in toolpath generation in a CAM system. Import the DXF or STEP file into CAM software to define machine operations, select appropriate cutting tools, and create toolpaths based on the geometry in the file. This helps to visualize how the cutting tool will move and interact with the workpiece during machining.

DXF and STEP files also serve as valuable tools for geometry verification by providing detailed representations of part geometry, dimensions, features, tolerances, and alignments. Leverage the files to analyze, inspect, and verify the accuracy of the integrity of part geometry, ensuring that the manufactured parts meet design specifications, quality standards and functional requirements with precision and reliability.

How to Access the Files

We've improved file accessibility by considering factors like time, location, and processes. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to use our website to immediately access the files.

1. Head over to the SCT homepage and click on the Tool Info Search button (or click here).

Type in the first few characters of the part number or the EDP number. Click on the desired tool.

2. The tool information will be generated. Availability and other important information is displayed on the right-hand side. Everything is frequently updated to ensure the most accurate stock information.

3. On the left hand side (under the product image), is a brief description. Underneath that, you'll find file links. Click on the STEP File or DXF File button to download the file.
