Scientific Cutting Tools launches Zirc and Onyx DLC coating program

Simi Valley, Calif., March 18, 2026 — Scientific Cutting Tools (SCT), a U.S.-based manufacturer of precision carbide cutting tools, has announced the hard launch of its Zirc (ZrCN) and Onyx DLC (ta-C) coating programs, expanding performance options for machining non-ferrous materials and demanding threading applications.

As part of the launch, Onyx DLC (ta-C) is now available across several solid carbide thread mill product lines, including UN and metric single-profile thread mills, straight flute thread mills, and 15° helical thread mills. The coating provides an ultra-low friction surface and high hardness that help reduce adhesion and wear when machining aluminum and other non-ferrous materials.

Zirc (ZrCN) is now offered across SCT’s hydraulic porting tool lineup, including SAE J1926 and AS5202 reamer-style and pilotless tools. The coating is designed to reduce built-up edge and improve surface finish when machining aluminum manifolds and valve bodies commonly used in hydraulic systems.

“Different materials create different wear mechanisms at the cutting edge,” said Jonathan Christopher, Director of Manufacturing at Scientific Cutting Tools. “By expanding our coating options across both thread mills and porting tools, we’re giving machinists clearer ways to match the tool to the material and maintain consistent performance in the cut.”

The expanded coating lineup allows manufacturers to better optimize tooling based on workpiece material, chip behavior, and heat generation during machining operations.
